Denmark and Greenland have confirmed that a proposed agreement allowing the United States to expand its military presence in Greenland will respect the Arctic territory’s sovereignty and the right of its people to self-determination. This assurance follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a deal granting the U.S. what he termed “permanent control” over Greenland’s security.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that the agreement acknowledges Greenland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the rights of its people. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen added that the deal could enhance security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while honoring Denmark’s conditions regarding Greenland’s autonomy.
The proposed agreement would permit the U.S. to establish a significant military presence in Greenland, barring adversarial nations from setting up their own bases on the island. The details of the agreement, including the scale of the U.S. military expansion and any potential influence over Greenland’s foreign policy or natural resources, remain undisclosed.
The plan is expected to be formalized during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Greenland’s strategic value, due to its Arctic location and resources, has been a focal point of U.S. interest, with the U.S. already maintaining the Pituffik Space Base there for missile warning and space operations.
This development follows heightened tensions between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk over Greenland’s strategic importance, especially concerning its mineral resources and emerging Arctic shipping routes. NATO has expressed support for the agreement, indicating it could foster increased security and cooperation in the Arctic region.
