Ceasefire with Iran in jeopardy as Trump dismisses peace plans.

President Donald Trump has expressed skepticism regarding the ongoing ceasefire with Iran, describing it as being on “life support.” He is contemplating the re-initiation of U.S. Navy military escorts for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to counter the Iranian blockade of this crucial maritime route. Trump dismissed Iran’s recent peace proposals as foolish and denied facing any internal pressure to negotiate a deal.

The ceasefire, effective since April 7, is perceived by Trump as extremely fragile. He criticized the proposals from Iran, stating, “I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us – I didn’t even finish reading it.” He likened the situation to a medical scenario where hope for recovery is minimal, saying, “I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says: ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living.’”

In an effort to ease tensions, the U.S. had previously submitted a set of conditions aimed at preventing Iran from advancing its nuclear program. However, Iran’s counter-proposals were swiftly rejected by Trump. The U.S. had initially launched Project Freedom, a plan to escort oil tankers through the strait, but halted it after just two days to allow Iran time to respond to the peace proposals. The plan faced opposition from Saudi Arabia, which refused to allow the use of its airspace or bases for operations it deemed escalatory.

Trump’s recent statements followed a spike in oil prices, which occurred after Iran declared it would not engage in further discussions to lift the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz unless its conditions were met. Maj Gen Mohammad Ali Jafari, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, asserted that no further negotiations would take place until the war ends on all fronts, sanctions are lifted, blocked funds are released, war damages are compensated, and Iran’s sovereignty over the strait is acknowledged.
