Michigan Land Conservancy Receives 1.15 MW Energy Storage from Advanced Battery Concepts

by admin477351

The U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval to an energy storage project spearheaded by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC) that aims to enhance the renewable energy capabilities at the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) headquarters in Traverse City, Michigan. This approval allows the project to progress into its next phases.

The project involves installing a 1.15 megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system to work in tandem with the site’s existing 185 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic system. The new system is designed to store excess electricity generated by solar panels and supply it during periods of higher demand, thereby boosting energy resilience and optimizing the use of renewable resources.

ABC’s innovative GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, which forms the crux of this project, is noted for using significantly less lead than traditional batteries while maintaining the safety and recyclability typical of lead-based chemistries. This technology will be incorporated within three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ energy storage enclosures. ABC’s batteries are both developed and manufactured in Michigan, underlining the state’s pivotal role in the U.S. energy storage sector.

The project is funded through Congressionally Directed Spending overseen by the Department of Energy. Following the funding approval, the project has entered the procurement and manufacturing phase, with installation and commissioning expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2027.
