Trump Announces Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire, But Zelenskyy Was Not Informed

by admin477351

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, asserting that both nations have agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he was not consulted about the agreement and would only accept it if Russia also ceased its attacks.

The announcement, made via Trump’s social media post, lacked specifics regarding the ceasefire’s start date and implementation process. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to comply, contingent upon Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to the same terms. This development follows a disagreement between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries, which Trump urged to stop, while Zelenskyy insisted on Moscow ceasing its strikes on Ukrainian facilities first.

Despite Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy reported continued Russian drone and airstrikes targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv, and repeated strikes on gas and oil facilities. Tensions further escalated after Trump proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, claiming it could reduce fuel prices before the U.S. midterm elections. Zelenskyy criticized this decision, warning it could bolster Russia’s war capabilities.

In response to Zelenskyy’s refusal to make concessions, Trump suggested that Ukraine might need new leadership. Zelenskyy countered that leadership decisions are for the Ukrainian people to make, mentioning he would consider elections if Russia agreed to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire. The situation has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies about Washington’s strategy for ending the war.

Reports have suggested that the U.S. might leverage military procurement arrangements and economic incentives to pressure Kyiv and Moscow into accepting a ceasefire. Ukraine maintains that its attacks on Russian oil facilities are aimed at undermining Moscow’s war financing, while Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian targets reinforces Kyiv’s demand for a reciprocal ceasefire.

Zelenskyy has sought to strengthen international support by engaging with European and global leaders. Several European leaders have reiterated the necessity of maintaining pressure on Russia and have called for an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The proposed ceasefire remains uncertain, with no confirmation of Russia’s agreement to its terms, underscoring the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the conditions needed to achieve a lasting peace.
