In a move to bolster domestic industry, US President Donald Trump has announced a 15% tariff on imported products that include polysilicon, a critical component in the production of semiconductors and solar panels. This tariff, set to take effect on December 4, aims to enhance the United States’ manufacturing capabilities and lessen its dependency on Chinese imports. Polysilicon, known for its ultra-pure form of silicon, is essential in the creation of semiconductors that fuel artificial intelligence systems and data centers, as well as solar cells and panels. Currently, China holds the position as the leading producer of this material worldwide.
The new tariff measures also stipulate minimum import prices, which include $21 per kilogram for polysilicon, $100 per kilogram for polysilicon ingots and wafers, and $0.22 per watt for solar cells, with solar modules and panels priced at $0.38 per watt. The US administration has stated that these actions are designed to support the domestic production of polysilicon and to reinforce crucial supply chains that are linked to both economic stability and national security concerns.
China has expressed disapproval of the US decision, accusing the American government of exploiting national security issues to limit Chinese businesses. They have warned that such protectionist measures could potentially disrupt bilateral trade relations. Despite these tensions, the US remains focused on enhancing its internal production capabilities. Currently, two major polysilicon production facilities operate within the country, managed by Hemlock Semiconductor in Michigan and Wacker Chemie in Tennessee.
Alongside the tariff, the US policy includes the provision for governmental incentives aimed at encouraging companies to invest in domestic polysilicon and related manufacturing infrastructure. This strategic push comes amid China’s continued strong growth in export sectors, particularly in electronics, artificial intelligence-related products, and other high-value manufacturing industries. By imposing these tariffs, the US seeks to secure a more self-reliant and robust manufacturing landscape within its borders.
