Senior Democratic leaders are urging President Donald Trump to bring an end to the ongoing conflict with Iran following the deaths of three US service members in recent military actions in Jordan and Iraq. The fatalities have heightened concerns over increasing casualties and the potential for a broader regional conflict. The Pentagon has identified two soldiers killed in an attack on the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan as First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Texas. A third service member lost their life in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance, with authorities also investigating the discovery of what could be a fourth victim’s remains in Jordan.
These incidents occurred amid a sustained campaign of US strikes on Iranian targets, marking the tenth consecutive wave of military action. In response, Iran has promised retaliation against regional allies supporting American military efforts. Democratic legislators have been vocal in their criticism of Trump’s approach, with Senator Chris Murphy expressing alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has labeled the military campaign as an unnecessary and costly war that endangers American troops.
Calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities have been made by several Democrats, including Senators Mark Warner and Chris Van Hollen, who have also urged the administration to obtain congressional approval for any future military interventions. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has advocated for renewed diplomatic measures to de-escalate the crisis. Congress has already passed war powers resolutions to limit the president’s ability to conduct military operations without legislative consent. Nevertheless, the White House maintains that the requirement for congressional authorization has not been met due to a previous ceasefire period.
The conflict, which resumed earlier this year, has so far resulted in at least 17 US military casualties, while Iranian civilian deaths are estimated to be over 1,700. Despite mounting criticism from Democrats, Republican leaders have largely supported Trump’s actions, asserting that military intervention is essential to counter Iranian threats and defend US interests in the region. They have cautioned that the situation could escalate into a larger regional confrontation.
