California and New York have filed lawsuits against the Trump administration, challenging its decision to repurchase offshore wind leases and terminate renewable energy projects. The states argue that these actions could hamper clean-energy development and drive up electricity costs.
The legal actions were initiated by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Bonta’s lawsuit contests the cancellation of an offshore wind project planned by Invenergy, a Chicago-based company, off the coast of California. Meanwhile, James is spearheading a coalition of states opposing agreements involving Invenergy and Bluepoint Wind. These agreements would financially compensate energy companies for ceasing offshore wind projects under development.
The Trump administration has allocated billions of dollars to incentivize companies to abandon renewable energy projects. The Interior Department defends these buyback agreements, asserting that companies are redirecting investments toward fossil fuels and other energy sources deemed more reliable.
James described the agreements as unlawful, emphasizing that the cancellation of wind projects could complicate efforts to meet rising electricity demands. Bonta echoed these concerns, stating that California will continue its pursuit of clean-energy initiatives despite federal policy shifts.
