The US Air Force has rescinded promotions for 135 personnel in its security forces due to a scoring error discovered in a specialty knowledge test. The error stemmed from the use of an outdated scoring key to evaluate the Security Forces Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT), leading to incorrect assessments and premature promotions to the rank of technical sergeant for these individuals.
Upon identifying the mistake, the Air Force undertook a comprehensive review of all 2,285 exam papers to ensure accurate results. This process revealed the correct candidates for promotion, leading to the retraction of the 135 erroneous promotions and the confirmation of those who rightfully qualified. The total number of promotions available remains steady at 586, as initially designated.
Air Force officials have characterized the incident as an isolated human error, emphasizing that no artificial intelligence tools were involved in the grading of the test. To address the situation, affected personnel have been informed of the changes, and support has been extended to them to manage any concerns arising from this adjustment.
In response to the mishap, the Air Force has reinforced its internal review protocols with the aim of preventing similar errors in future promotion cycles. Leadership remains committed to ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the promotion process going forward.
