A federal appeals court in the United States has turned down former President Donald Trump’s attempt to delay the payment of $5.8 million to writer E. Jean Carroll. This amount is owed following Carroll’s successful lawsuit in 2023 where she accused Trump of sexual abuse and defamation.
The ruling came after Trump contested a previous decision by a lower court that instructed the release of the money. These funds were held in a court-controlled account while the appeals process was underway. They include the original judgment of $5 million plus interest that had accrued over time.
This decision follows a recent move by the US Supreme Court, which refused to consider Trump’s appeal, thereby leaving the original judgment intact. Judge Lewis Kaplan emphasized that the legal proceedings had run their course and that it was now time for the payment to be made.
Despite the court’s ruling, Trump has continued to deny all the allegations against him. He also persists in disputing the legal interpretation of the agreement that regulates the release of these funds.
