Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Sunset Center is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone with a community event on October 25, 2026, marking 100 years since the opening of its original campus building, Sunset School. This upcoming event will kick off the “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031” celebration, a five-year-long commemoration leading up to the centennial of the historic theater auditorium in 2031. The festivities will be free and open to the public, featuring an array of cultural showcases and activities from 1 to 4 p.m.

The anniversary event promises a vibrant afternoon with live performances, visual arts, historical exhibits, and family-friendly activities. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., attendees can enjoy performances in the iconic 718-seat theater and on the outdoor terrace. A host of cultural organizations, such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, and Carmel Music Society, will be among the participants. Visitors can also look forward to performances by local groups including the Carmel High School Chamber Singers and the Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC.

In addition to performances, the event will offer interactive community art and historical activities. The Sunset Legacy Wall will invite guests to contribute their artwork, memories, and messages reflecting the center’s impact on the community. Families can engage in rock painting, while other activities will include live art, music, photography, wellness programs, and guided tours of the historic campus. A special archival exhibition will showcase the Sunset Center’s transformation from a school to a regional cultural hub.

Local organizations such as the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, and The Carmel Foundation will also participate, enhancing the community-centric spirit of the day. Attendees will be treated to complimentary refreshments, with additional food and beverage options available for purchase from Sunset Center concessions. This celebration is not just a look back at the past but a step toward the future, highlighting the center’s enduring connection to the Monterey Peninsula community.

The event will be held at the Sunset Center, located at San Carlos Street at Ninth Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Admission is free to the public, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.
