US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced plans to strengthen collaborations with Latin American countries in the fight against drug trafficking, while affirming that the US military will continue to target suspicious vessels when deemed necessary. During his visit to Ecuador, Rubio highlighted ongoing efforts to establish agreements for joint operations with nations such as Ecuador and Colombia, emphasizing the importance of respecting territorial waters and adhering to local laws.
This statement comes amidst an active US military campaign targeting boats believed to be involved in drug trafficking. The campaign, which has been underway since September 2025, has reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 230 individuals across 69 operations, with a recent strike in the Caribbean Sea allegedly killing three people. Rubio mentioned that future military actions would be assessed individually, taking into account the threat posed and the vessel’s location.
Rubio underscored the potential of regional cooperation to significantly disrupt and eventually dismantle drug-trafficking networks. This approach marks a strategic shift towards greater collaboration, following criticism of earlier US military strikes that were conducted unilaterally. These strikes, initiated under the Trump administration, targeted vessels whose occupants were accused of being associated with “narco-terrorists.”
