US inflation rose to 3.7% in September, up from 3.4% in August, increasing economic pressure on the administration ahead of the November midterm elections. The rise in consumer prices, driven significantly by higher energy costs, continues to concern American households struggling with living expenses.

According to government data, consumer prices increased by 0.6% month-on-month in September. Notably, gasoline prices surged 34% compared to the previous year, while fuel oil prices climbed by 74%, impacting household budgets as winter approaches. Additionally, air travel costs saw a 22.4% year-on-year increase.

Core inflation, which excludes the volatile categories of food and energy, reached an annual rate of 2.6%. The persistent rise in prices underscores the strain on household budgets, with fuel and transportation costs affecting the broader economy.

The ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran has exacerbated global energy prices, resulting in higher costs for gasoline and diesel. These increases add pressure on consumers and businesses alike, while sustained inflation challenges public confidence in the administration’s economic policies.

Economic issues are likely to be a pivotal factor in the upcoming midterm elections, with numerous voters expressing concern over affordability and the rising cost of living. The current political leadership, which holds control of both the White House and Congress, faces mounting pressure to show progress in managing inflation.

President Trump has attributed rising oil prices to Iran and regional instability while defending his administration’s economic performance. However, continued price hikes may complicate efforts to reassure voters about the economic situation.

The Federal Reserve faces its own challenges due to elevated inflation rates as it considers future monetary policies. High prices could limit options for interest-rate cuts, while increased borrowing costs may continue to affect mortgages, businesses, and consumers.

The September inflation figures highlight the economic challenges confronting the United States as the electorate prepares to determine control of Congress in the upcoming elections.
