Facebook, Instagram to Implement Teen Safety Reforms After Settlement with Meta.

Meta has consented to significant modifications of its Facebook and Instagram platforms following a settlement with California and 28 other U.S. states. This agreement addresses allegations that the company’s platforms have been detrimental and fostered addictive behaviors among teenagers. As part of the settlement, Meta will implement enhanced safety measures for teenage users across the United States, including setting daily usage limits and curbing notifications during school hours and nighttime. Additionally, the company will limit the use of certain plastic surgery filters targeting younger users.

The settlement could potentially require Meta to pay up to $18 billion, with funds allocated among the participating states over a decade, pending court approval. California is anticipated to receive between $1.5 billion and $2.1 billion, while Colorado is expected to gain approximately $615 million. This agreement follows accusations that Meta intentionally crafted features to keep young users engaged for extended periods and collected data from children under 13 without adequate parental consent.

Meta has refuted any wrongdoing and emphasized that the settlement’s impact would be greater if other leading social media platforms adopted similar protective measures. The company has urged rivals such as TikTok, Snap, and YouTube to implement comparable safeguards for young users.

This agreement emerges as Meta, along with other social media giants, faces a multitude of lawsuits filed by families, educational institutions, and government authorities, all alleging harm associated with social media usage among children and teenagers. The settlement represents a significant step in addressing these concerns while highlighting the ongoing scrutiny and legal challenges faced by social media companies over their impact on youth.
