Oil Barrels Past Century Mark as Iran Arms Itself with Russian Intelligence

by admin477351

The revelation that Russia had been supplying Iran with targeting intelligence for attacks on US military assets in the region transformed the conflict from a Middle Eastern military dispute into something with potentially global consequences. Oil prices, already above $100 per barrel following Israeli strikes on Iranian energy facilities, were now reflecting not just regional risk but the possibility of a much larger confrontation.

Israeli strikes on oil storage and fuel distribution facilities near Tehran killed four workers and left the capital covered in thick black smoke. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened to push global oil to $200 per barrel and launched coordinated strikes against Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait, demonstrating the reach and capability that Russian intelligence support may have helped develop.

Saudi forces intercepted 15 drones, Bahrain’s desalination plant was damaged, two Saudi civilians were killed, and a US service member died from wounds sustained in an Iranian attack — the seventh American killed. The death came as reports emerged that Russia had been directly supporting Iran’s targeting operations against the very forces whose presence in Saudi Arabia was meant to deter Iranian aggression.

Iran’s clerical assembly appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader following his father’s death, a historic first that drew international criticism. His appointment was seen as consolidating hardline authority at a moment when the addition of Russian intelligence support had given Iran a new and more dangerous military capability.

Washington pledged not to target Iranian oil infrastructure and expressed confidence that supply disruptions would be brief. But the combination of Russian intelligence, Iranian missiles, and oil above $100 meant that the conflict had entered territory that neither markets nor governments had fully priced in.
