Federal Deficit Expected to Hit $2.1 Trillion by 2026

The United States is on track to see its federal budget deficit hit approximately $2.1 trillion by the fiscal year 2026 as government expenditures continue to outpace tax revenue growth. This projection, released by the Congressional Budget Office, highlights a concerning trend in which federal spending is increasing significantly more rapidly than income from taxes.

In the first ten months of the current fiscal year, the federal deficit reached nearly $1.8 trillion, which marks an increase of about $169 billion compared to the same period last year. This rise is attributed to a $308 billion increase in federal spending, while tax receipts only saw a $139 billion uptick. A significant factor contributing to the expanding deficit is the growing cost of interest on the national debt. Over the first ten months, interest payments surged by $117 billion, or 14%, compared to the previous year.

Spending on major government programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid has also seen substantial increases. Social Security expenditures grew by $70 billion, Medicare by $66 billion, and Medicaid by $45 billion. While there was an increase in individual and payroll tax collections, corporate tax revenue saw a noticeable decline. Additionally, tariff revenue was impacted by refunds, further constraining the government’s overall income.

According to the CBO, while government spending is expected to stay close to previous estimates, anticipated revenue is now projected to be about $200 billion lower than earlier forecasts. This growing deficit is raising alarms about the sustainability of U.S. government borrowing and the escalating national debt.
