President Donald Trump has decided to cancel nearly $1 billion in spending that was previously approved by Congress, specifically targeting funds allocated for immigrant services and diversity-focused initiatives. The White House justifies this move by citing the need to eliminate what it terms as wasteful or harmful government spending, emphasizing that a significant portion of the funds supports organizations aiding refugees, unaccompanied minors, and other immigrant communities.
The Trump administration argues that the funding is no longer necessary due to a significant decline in illegal border crossings. However, this decision has faced criticism from lawmakers across the political spectrum. Republican Senator Susan Collins, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, expressed concern that the administration acted without sufficient consultation with Congress, asserting that the executive branch should not unilaterally decide which congressionally approved programs receive funding.
Democratic Senator Patty Murray also criticized the move, highlighting that the funds were approved by Congress on a bipartisan basis and should be used for their intended purposes. The funding cuts are being executed through a process called a “pocket rescission,” where spending is effectively canceled at the fiscal year’s end, leaving Congress with minimal time to review or challenge the decision.
This approach has raised legal questions from the Government Accountability Office regarding its legitimacy.
