US President Donald Trump announced plans for a $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa, marking what he described as the largest facility of its kind in American history. Developed by Mesabi Metallics, a steel company under India-based Essar Group, the plant’s construction is underway with a production start date anticipated for 2030.
The new steel plant is set to use iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota and aims to produce high-quality steel for the US market. This project is projected to create approximately 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 manufacturing and mining jobs, providing a significant boost to local employment.
Federal support for the steel plant is substantial, with the US Export-Import Bank offering up to $10 billion in financing. While most materials will be domestically sourced, company chairman Rewant Ruia noted that some specialized materials may require importation.
Trump attributed the decision to build the plant in the US to his administration’s tariffs on imported goods, which he claims have encouraged companies to invest in domestic manufacturing. This announcement comes at a politically strategic time as Iowa gears up for the 2026 Senate election, where industrial investment and job creation are key issues.
